Apostille for Italy: How to Apostille Canadian Documents for Use in Italy

3 min read

If you need to submit Canadian documents in Italy for a visa, residency, citizenship, work, study, or another official purpose, your documents will need to meet the applicable Italian document requirements before they can be accepted.

For many Canadian documents, this means obtaining an apostille in Canada.

The important part is that not every Canadian document follows the same apostille process. Depending on what you have, your document may need to be processed by Global Affairs Canada or a provincial apostille authority. Some documents also require additional preparation before an apostille can be issued.

At Richmond Hill Fingerprints & Background Checks, we handle the apostille process from start to finish. You can simply send us your documents and let us know that they will be used in Italy. We will review them, determine the correct process, complete any required notarization or certification, and arrange the apostille through the appropriate Canadian authority.

RCMP Criminal Record Check Apostille for Italy

If you need an RCMP Certified Criminal Record Check for use in Italy, there is an important requirement to know:

Your RCMP criminal record check must be apostilled by Global Affairs Canada.

The Consulate General of Italy in Toronto specifically states that apostilles issued by the Province of Ontario are not accepted for RCMP criminal record checks.

This is particularly important because apostille requirements for RCMP checks can differ depending on the destination country. If your RCMP check is being used in Italy, it must follow the federal apostille process through Global Affairs Canada.

Richmond Hill Fingerprints & Background Checks can handle this process for you. If you already have your RCMP criminal record check, you can send the document to our office and we will arrange the Global Affairs Canada apostille on your behalf.

If you do not have your RCMP check yet, we can help with that as well. As an RCMP-accredited fingerprinting agency, we can complete your digital fingerprints for the RCMP Certified Criminal Record Check and then handle the apostille process once your document is issued.

Don't Leave Your RCMP Check Until the Last Minute

Timing is important when you need an RCMP criminal record check for Italy.

For certain Italian applications, criminal record certificates must have been issued within the previous six months. For example, this six-month requirement applies to criminal record certificates submitted for Italian citizenship through marriage.

Remember that obtaining the RCMP check is only the first step. The document then has to be apostilled by Global Affairs Canada, and federal apostille processing can take several weeks.

If you know you will need an RCMP criminal record check for Italy, it is a good idea to start early enough to allow time for both the RCMP processing and the apostille.

Does the Apostille Need to Be Translated Into Italian?

No. The apostille certificate itself does not need to be translated into Italian. The Consulate General of Italy in Toronto specifically confirms this.

The Consulate provides information about translators whose signatures are registered with the Consulate. If you use a translator who is not registered with the Consulate, the translation must be notarized and then separately apostilled before it can be used in Italy.

What Other Canadian Documents Can Be Apostilled for Italy?

In addition to RCMP criminal record checks, you may need to have other Canadian documents apostilled for use in Italy, including:

  • Birth certificates

  • Marriage certificates

  • Divorce documents

  • Degrees, diplomas and educational documents

  • Powers of attorney

  • Medical documents

  • Business and corporate documents

  • Notarized documents

  • Other personal or legal documents

The correct apostille process depends on the document and where it was issued or notarized. For example, documents issued or notarized in Ontario are handled through Ontario's apostille authority, while certain federal documents are handled by Global Affairs Canada.

You don't need to figure out which authority handles your documents.

Send them to us and we will take care of the process. We review each document, determine the correct apostille authority, arrange any notarization or certification that is required, and handle the apostille on your behalf.
